What’s HIKITE?
襖引手（ふすまひきて）は、襖の開け閉めに使われる取っ手であり、実用性と装飾性を兼ね備えた建具のひとつです。目立つ存在ではありませんが、襖紙の美しさを引き立てる“さりげないインテリア”ともいえます。
その起源は室町・鎌倉時代にまでさかのぼり、装飾として用いられたことが始まりとされています。本格的に普及したのは江戸時代。豪商や武家の屋敷では、金銀・銅・真鍮などで贅を尽くした引手が使われました。今でも当時の職人技が光る逸品が寺社や御殿に残されており、引手は日本の建築文化の一端を担う存在といえるでしょう。

Fusuma Hikite (Sliding Door Handles) are the handles used to open and close traditional Japanese sliding doors called fusuma. While they may seem understated, they combine both practicality and
decorative appeal, subtly enhancing the beauty of the fusuma paper. Their origins date back to the Muromachi and Kamakura periods, initially serving as ornamental elements. These handles became widely used during the Edo period, where wealthy merchants and samurai households crafted them from precious metals such as gold, silver, copper, and brass. Even today, exquisite examples of skilled craftsmanship remain preserved in temples and palaces, making fusuma hikite an important part of Japan’s architectural heritage.
