A wide variety of materials are used for hikite (sliding door handles), with brass and copper being the most common. To keep costs down, iron or plastic is sometimes used, though these lack the refined texture that metals provide. High-end hikite may feature precious metals like silver, gold, or platinum—among these, silver is especially popular for its balance of quality and price. In the past, specialized alloys such as shakudō were also used, but today, fewer craftsmen work with them, making such materials less common.Silver hikite often highlight the natural beauty of the material, with simple shapes and traditional finishes such as usu-ibushi (light patina). In addition to metal, natural materials like wood, ceramics, bamboo, and ivory are also used, offering a wide range of expressions to suit the mood and purpose of a space.
